This book describes a global assessment of stem cell engineering research, achieved through site visits by a panel of experts to leading institutes, followed by dedicated workshops. The assessment made clear that engineers and the engineering approach with its quantitative, system-based thinking can contribute much to the progress of stem cell research and development. The increased need for complex computational models and new, innovative technologies, such as high-throughput screening techniques, organ-on-a-chip models and in vitro tumor models require an increasing involvement of engineers and physical scientists. Additionally, this book will show that although the US is still in a leadership position in stem cell engineering, Asian countries such as Japan, China and Korea, as well as European countries like the UK, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands are rapidly expanding their investments in the field. Strategic partnerships between countries could lead to major advances of the field and scalable expansion and differentiation of stem cells. This study was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
History and Science of Knots

History and Science of Knots

This book brings together twenty essays on diverse topics in the history and science of knots. It is divided into five parts, which deal respectively with knots in prehistory and antiquity, non-European traditions, working knots, the developing science of knots, and decorative and other aspects of knots. Its authors include archaeologists who write on knots found in digs of ancient sites (one describes the knots used by the recently discovered Ice Man); practical knotters who have studied the history and uses of knots at sea, for fishing and for various life support activities; a historian of lace; a computer scientist writing on computer classification of doilies; and mathematicians who describe the history of knot theories from the eighteenth century to the present day. In view of the explosion of mathematical theories of knots in the past decade, with consequential new and important scientific applications, this book is timely in setting down a brief, fragmentary history of mankind's oldest and most useful technical and decorative device — the knot. The stories are all told by the author in the first person, typically addressing a Parisian reader. The author, having relocated his home from Paris, recounts short bucolic tales about his new life in Provence as well as his trips to Corsica and French Algeria. Considered to be light-hearted, and often a bit tongue-in-cheek, the stories vary from day-to-day events in southern France to Provençal folk-tales, and often feature professions and faunal references characteristic of Provence.

Proliferating Talent

Author: Yukihiko Motoyama, J. S. A. Elisonas, Richard Rubinger
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 0824818466
Pages: 475
Year: 1997-01
The eight essays translated here by Motoyama's colleagues from North America and Europe broadly cover the eventful half century that witnessed the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate and the rise of the modern Japanese state to the position of an international power. They deal topically with political, intellectual, and educational issues that occupied the attention of the Japanese government and public in the period from 1853, the momentuous year of Commodore Perry's arrival, to 1905 and the aftermath of another climactic event, Japan's victory over Russia. In the essay from which the book's title is derived, Motoyama examines a private school in Kumamoto, the Seiseiko (School of Proliferating Talent), which was run by a group with a rebel background but statist interests. The group and its school are a prime example of the ambiguities explored throughout the volume. The essays muster a great variety of sources, ranging from graffiti and popular doggerel of the period immediately before the Meiji Restoration to the discourses, letters, and diaries of major intellectual and political figures of the Meiji period.
