The Holy Bible is the infallible word of God. The Bible is also great literature. The King James Bible is one of the glories of English literature. Much of the literary beauty of the Bible comes from the context and stories that are being portrayed and is therefore identical in other languages. Why not using our reading of the Holy Bible to learn a foreign language, and kill two birds with the same stone? You can read the Holy Scriptures in French and, if you have a doubt, check the word of God in English, right next to it.

This book offers a broad-based, contemporary perspective on Bible translation in terms of academic areas foundational to the endeavor: translation studies, communication theory, linguistics, cultural studies, biblical studies and literary and rhetorical studies. The discussion of each area is geared towards non-specialists, to introduce them to notions, trends and tools that can contribute to their understanding of translation. The Bible translator is encouraged to appreciate various approaches to translation in view of the wide variety of communicative, organizational and sociocultural situations in which translation occurs. However, literary representation of the Scriptures receives special attention since it has been neglected in earlier, influential works on Bible translation. In addition to useful introductory and concluding sections, the book consists of six chapters: Scripture Translation in the Era of Translation Studies; Translation and Communication; The Role of Culture in Communication; Advances in Linguistic Theory and their Relavance to Translation; Biblical Studies and Bible Translation; and A Lterary Approach to Biblical Text Analysis and Translation. The authors are translation consultants for the United Bible Societies. They have worked with translation projects in various media and in languages ranging from ones of a few hundred speakers to international ones, in Africa, the Americas and Asia.

Discourse and Meaning
Author: Barbara H. Partee, Petr Sgall
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
A collection of papers in honor of Eva HajiÄová, who represents the continuation of the Prague School tradition in the methodological context of formal and computational linguistics. Her broadly acknowledged contribution to syntax, topic-focus studies, discourse analysis and natural language processing is reflected in the papers by 30 authors, divided in five sections (Discourse, Meaning, Focus, Translation, Structure).
The Yearbook of Corpus Linguistics and Pragmatics addresses the interface between the two disciplines and offers a platform to scholars who combine both methodologies to present rigorous and interdisciplinary findings about language in real use. Corpus linguistics and Pragmatics have traditionally represented two paths of scientific thought, parallel but often mutually exclusive and excluding. Corpus Linguistics can offer a meticulous methodology based on mathematics and statistics, while Pragmatics is characterized by its effort in the interpretation of intended meaning in real language. This series will give readers insight into how pragmatics can be used to explain real corpus data and also, how corpora can illustrate pragmatic intuitions. The present volume, Yearbook of Corpus Linguistics and Pragmatics 2014: New Empirical and Theoretical Paradigms in Corpus Pragmatics, proposes innovative research models in the liaison between pragmatics and corpus linguistics to explain language in current cultural and social contexts.

There is no human work in existence that contains statements as far beyond the level of knowledge of its time as the Qurâan. Scientific opinions comparable to those in the Qurâan are the result of modern knowledge. In the commentaries to translations of the Qurâan that have appeared in European languages, I have only been able to find scattered and vague references to them. Nor do commentators writing in Arabic provide a complete study of the aspects of the Qurâan that deal with scientific matters. This is why the idea of a comprehensive study of the problem appealed to me.

Crime Scene Jerusalem
Author: Alton Gansky
Publisher: David C Cook
Those in the know regard Maxwell Odom as one of the nation's top crime scene investigators. The ugliness his job has forced him to see has made Maxwell cynical and unpleasant. In late 2006, he travels to Jerusalem to deliver a keynote address to the Association of Israeli Police and to lead a hands-on training seminar. While napping in his suite in the Jerusalem Hotel, he is jarred awake by the phone. The front desk tells him that his driver has arrived. As he steps out to meet his driver, he finds he has been miraculously transported to ancient Jerusalem in the days following Jesus' execution. His guide, Yoshua, informs Odom that a crime has been committed and that his expertise is needed. According to Yoshua, the only way for Odom to return to his own time is by solving a historical crime - a conspiracy of the many to kill the one. Over the next few days, Odom travels from the Upper Room to the Tomb of Christ attempting to run a modern forensics investigation in the first century. Each step of the way, he evaluates the scene, reconstructing the long trail of multiple crimes. As he works, he must look at his own beliefs, attitudes, and life. Along the way he meets people who have known Jesus and he begins to see what had only been to him an archaic hiccup in history in a new light. In the end, Odom and the reader come to understand Christ and His death in a personal way. Features and Benefits Takes a new approach to one of the most analyzed events in history where most books take a nonfiction approach to the analysis of Christ's death, the reader experiences the event through the eyes of a skeptical, disillusioned crime scene investigator who is forced to look at the physical evidence. Field interviews with eyewitnesses such as Mary, the mother of Jesus; Caiaphas; and Nicodemus help transport the reader back to biblical times making them feel like they're discovering evidence right alongside a forensic detective.

The New King James Version is a modernisation of the King James Version of 1611. It preserves the dignified style and the word and phrase order of the KJV but replaces words and expressions no longer easily understood. The slimline Cambridge Pitt Minion format is widely admired for its compact but clear type and its elegant binding styles. In the NKJV editions the words of Christ are printed in red and there are full cross-references, a dictionary/concordance and maps. This is a Bible binding of the very highest quality, printed on very thin and light India paper, with beautiful art-gilt edges. The pages are Smyth-sewn, giving the books plenty of support and allowing them to stay flat once open. The cover is made from brown goatskin leather, a supremely supple and flexible material, which not only looks and feels good, but will last for many years. This Bible has two ribbons to keep the place and a presentation page.
