Si l’on ne réagit pas rapidement, l’humanité ne produira bientôt plus assez pour se nourrir et le prix des aliments sur le marché seront hors de portée de la majorité de la population. En France aujourd’hui, disparait l’équivalent d’un département de terres agricoles tous les 7 ans ! Augmentation de la démographie, migrations de population, sur-exploitation des terres agricoles, urbanisation intensive, les causes sont multiples. Loin des recommandations du Grenelle de l’environnement, la France continue à consommer ses terres et à réduire chaque année sa capacité de production agricole s’obligeant à importer au prix fort de l’énergie des produits alimentaires et risquant à terme de mettre en péril sa souveraineté alimentaire. Plus largement, partout dans le monde, les terres sont menacées par l’accaparement des sols par les pays riches et les entreprises puissantes (exemple de l’Ethiopie où les autorités ont cédé 350 000 hectares aux compagnies étrangères entre 2008 et 2011), la pression foncière (en ces temps de crise, le sol représente une valeur refuge), l’exploitation trop intensive (qui est en passe d’anéantir la richesse biologique des sols) et le poids des lobbies (qui influencent souvent les décisions des gouvernements). Si des initiatives locales sont déjà prises, signe d’un réveil et montrant que ces solutions sont viables, elles demeurent encore trop rares. S’appuyant sur l’exemple de Mouans-Sartoux (où la ville propose aux cantines scolaires une alimentation biologique de qualité et de proximité, restant très raisonnable en terme de coût) et de quelques communes exemplaires, et sur le rapport de l’ONU sur l’agroécologie (« L’agroécologie peut doubler la production alimentaire en 10 ans », présenté le 8 mars 2011), les auteurs de ce livre s’attachent à démontrer qu’il est possible de nourrir la planète avec une agriculture raisonnée, contrairement à ce que les lobbies industriels et agroalimentaires voudraient laisser penser !

In this perspective, INRA and CIRAD launched the initiative, in 2006, to develop a foresight project for analysing issues pertaining to the world's food and agricultural systems on the 2050 timeline.
