One book. Two readers. A world of mystery, menace, and desire. A young woman picks up a book left behind by a stranger. Inside it are his margin notes, which reveal a reader entranced by the story and by its mysterious author. She responds with notes of her own, leaving the book for the stranger, and so begins an unlikely conversation that plunges them both into the unknown. The book: Ship of Theseus, the final novel by a prolific but enigmatic writer named V.M. Straka, in which a man with no past is shanghaied onto a strange ship with a monstrous crew and launched onto a disorienting and perilous journey. The writer: Straka, the incendiary and secretive subject of one of the world's greatest mysteries, a revolutionary about whom the world knows nothing apart from the words he wrote and the rumors that swirl around him. The readers: Jennifer and Eric, a college senior and a disgraced grad student, both facing crucial decisions about who they are, who they might become, and how much they're willing to trust another person with their passions, hurts, and fears. S., conceived by filmmaker J. J. Abrams and written by award-winning novelist Doug Dorst, is the chronicle of two readers finding each other in the margins of a book and enmeshing themselves in a deadly struggle between forces they don't understand, and it is also Abrams and Dorst's love letter to the written word.

Practical Guide to S Corporations (Fourth Edition) is written by noted practitioner, author and lecturer Michael Schlesinger. It also covers Treasury regulations related to the Code Sec. 199 manufacturing deduction, as well as cases, rulings and pronouncements issued since the Third Edition.Comprised of fifteen chapters, this book starts by considering the tax advantages of electing S corporation status. The middle chapters, Chapters 2-12, detail the operations of S corporations, discussing statutory requirements, taxpayers who qualify as shareholders, and considerations when converting a C corporation to S status. Chapter 13 provides a comparison of S corporations to other business entities such as limited liability companies, partnerships, and C corporations. Chapter 14 discusses S corporation subsidiaries, and Chapter 15 covers employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) for S corporations. The book also includes detailed reference material. The Index provides the best access to particular information, but the Contents in Detail can be used as a “second index” for quick entry into the topics. The Appendices supply sample language that can be used in practice, and the Case Table and Finding Lists compile all of the cases, statutes, rulings, and regulations documented throughout the chapters.S corporations are the most popular business entity type, and this updated CCH resource helps practitioners understand and manage individual S corps election, compliance, tax, planning and life-cycle needs. It explains the merits and limitations of S corps in relation to other entity choices and provides clear and practical guidance. Watching M*A*S*H, Watching America

It has been said that M*A*S*H was a show set in the 1950s which reflected the shifting values of the 1970s and early 1980s. Hawkeye Pierce, Radar O'Reilly, Trapper John McIntyre, Sherman Potter, Margaret (Hot Lips) Houlihan, B.J. Hunnicutt, Frank Burns, Charles Emerson Winchester, Max Klinger--these and the many other characters who populated the MASH 4077 used the Korean War as a backdrop to comment on many of the social issues of their day. Using a unique blend of comedy and drama, the show's first three seasons (1972-1975) focused on the anti-Vietnam War sentiment that consumed much of America. As Vietnam ended, M*A*S*H moved on to concentrate on other contemporary issues--the women's movement, the rise of the religious right in American politics, the new narcissism that marked the early 1980s, the heightened awareness of underage or excessive alcohol use, and the increased emphasis on family in American life. How the series presented these issues and its success in doing so are the subjects of this critical study. An episode listing--brief plot outline, casts and credits, air dates, and titles--is also provided.

S is a high-level language for manipulating, analysing and displaying data. It forms the basis of two highly acclaimed and widely used data analysis software systems, the commercial S-PLUS® and the Open Source R. This book provides an in-depth guide to writing software in the S language under either or both of those systems. It is intended for readers who have some acquaintance with the S language and want to know how to use it more effectively, for example to build re-usable tools for streamlining routine data analysis or to implement new statistical methods. One of the outstanding strengths of the S language is the ease with which it can be extended by users. S is a functional language, and functions written by users are first-class objects treated in the same way as functions provided by the system. S code is eminently readable and so a good way to document precisely what algorithms were used, and as much of the implementations are themselves written in S, they can be studied as models and to understand their subtleties. The current implementations also provide easy ways for S functions to call compiled code written in C, Fortran and similar languages; this is documented here in depth. Increasingly S is being used for statistical or graphical analysis within larger software systems or for whole vertical-market applications. The interface facilities are most developed on Windows® and these are covered with worked examples. The authors have written the widely used Modern Applied Statistics with S-PLUS, now in its third edition, and several software libraries that enhance S-PLUS and R; these and the examples used in both books are available on the Internet. Dr. W.N. Venables is a senior Statistician with the CSIRO/CMIS Environmetrics Project in Australia, having been at the Department of Statistics, University of Adelaide for many years previously. Professor B.D. Ripley holds the Chair of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford, and is the author of four other books on spatial statistics, simulation, pattern recognition and neural networks. Both authors are known and respected throughout the international S and R communities, for their books, workshops, short courses, freely available software and through their extensive contributions to the S-news and R mailing lists.

Structure and Function of Glutathione S-Transferases

Author: Kenneth D. Tew, Cecil B. Pickett, Timothy J. Mantle, Bengt Mannervik
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0849345820
Pages: 336

Structure and Function of Glutathione S-Transferases provides some of the latest information available on a variety of structural and functional components of glutathione S-transferases, a family of isozymes involved in many endogenous and exogenous functions in cells. Molecular studies presented in the book focus on the regulation of these enzymes and identify important response elements. X-ray crystallographic structures show detailed information on the structural aspects of these proteins. Metabolism of a number of carcinogens and drugs is covered in detail, and the role that these enzymes play in governing drug resistance at the preclinical and clinical levels is discussed. The book will be excellent for biochemists, pharmacologists, oncologists, experimental therapeutic specialists, and others interested in glutathione S-transferases.
Writings of Charles S. Peirce: A Chronological Edition, Volume 8

Writings of Charles S. Peirce: A Chronological Edition, Volume 8

Author: Charles S. Peirce
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 0253004217
Pages: 824
Year: 2009-12-07
Volume 8 of this landmark edition follows Peirce from May 1890 through July 1892—a period of turmoil as his career unraveled at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. The loss of his principal source of income meant the beginning of permanent penury and a lifelong struggle to find gainful employment. His key achievement during these years is his celebrated Monist metaphysical project, which consists of five classic articles on evolutionary cosmology. Also included are reviews and essays from The Nation in which Peirce critiques Paul Carus, William James, Auguste Comte, Cesare Lombroso, and Karl Pearson, and takes part in a famous dispute between Francis E. Abbot and Josiah Royce. Peirce's short philosophical essays, studies in non-Euclidean geometry and number theory, and his only known experiment in prose fiction complete his production during these years. Peirce's 1883-1909 contributions to the Century Dictionary form the content of volume 7 which is forthcoming.
