Rhetorical Perspectives on Argumentation

Rhetorical Perspectives on Argumentation

Author: David Zarefsky
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319054856
Pages: 265
Year: 2014-04-01
This book contains 20 essays tracing the work of David Zarefsky, a leading North American scholar of argumentation from a rhetorical perspective. The essays cohere around 4 general themes: objectives for studying argumentation rhetorically, approaches to rhetorical study of argumentation, patterns and schemes of rhetorical argumentation, and case studies illustrating the potential of studying argumentation rhetorically. These articles are drawn from across Zarefsky’s 45-year career. Many of these articles originally appeared in publications that are difficult to access today, and this collection brings the reader up to date on the topic. Zarefsky’s scholarship focuses on the role of language in political argumentation, the ways in which argumentation creates public knowledge and belief, the influence of framing and context on what is said and understood, the deployment of particular patterns and schemes of argumentation in public reasoning, and the influence of debate on politics and governance. All these topics are addressed in this book. Each of the conceptual essays includes brief application to specific cases, and five extended case studies are also presented in this volume. The case studies cover different themes: two explore famous political debates, the third focuses on presidential rhetoric across the course of United States history, the fourth on the arguments for liberalism at a time of political polarization, and the fifth on the contemporary effort to engage the United States with the Muslim world. This book is of interest to scholars in the fields of philosophy, logic, law, philosophy of law, and legal history. The range of topics and concepts addressed, the interplay of concepts and cases and the unifying perspective of rhetorical argumentation make this book a valuable read for students of argumentative practice, whether rhetorically or otherwise.
Living Theodrama

Living Theodrama

Author: Dr Wesley Vander Lugt
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 1472419456
Pages: 256
Year: 2014-04-28
Living Theodrama is a fresh, creative introduction to theological ethics. Offering an imaginative approach through dialogue with theatrical theory and practice, Vander Lugt demonstrates a new way to integrate actor-oriented and action-oriented approaches to Christian ethics within a comprehensive theodramatic model. This model affirms that life is a drama performed in the company of God and others, providing rich metaphors for relating theology to everyday formation and performance in this drama. Different chapters explore the role of the triune God, Scripture, tradition, the church, mission, and context in the process of formation and performance, thus dealing separately with major themes in theological ethics while incorporating them within an overarching model. This book contains not only a fruitful exchange between theological ethics and theatre, but it also presents a promising method for interdisciplinary dialogue between theology and the arts that will be valuable for students and practitioners across many different fields.

Five Wishes and the Prophecy of the Prince is a SING-ALONG FANTASY ADVENTURE. It revolves around a dramatic rhyming tale of five fairy sisters, who, in an effort to make their splendor eternal, turn themselves from Light loving Fairies of The Far Land into The Dark Five Witches of Nayan.Chasing their 'wishes' not only turns them wicked, but also persuades them to abduct a prince, ride a broom, make a sacrifice once in a while, collect toad spines, fall in love, dabble in witchcraft, betray, lie and at last find the 'truth' about their lives. It has a unique tone/story compared to the rest of the typical fairy tale genre which reveals itself as the story opens up gradually in the subsequent chapters. A constant battle between the good and the evil resides in their hearts at all times; both craving for dominance over the other. Tragedy, suspense and humor... mix it up with a lot of rhymes and your potion bottle of 'Five Wishes' is ready.

The primary purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a much-needed overview of human factors within the mining industry, in particular to understand the role of human error in mine safety, explaining contemporary risk management and safety systems approaches. The approach taken is multidisciplinary and holistic, based on a model of the systems of work in the mining industry domain. The ingredients in this model include individual operators, groups/teams, technology/equipment, work organisation and the physical environment. Throughout the book, topics such as human error and safety management are covered through the use of real examples and case studies, allowing the reader to see the practical significance of the material presented while making the text rigorous, useful and enjoyable. Understanding Human Error in Mine Safety is written for professionals in the field, researchers and students of mining engineering, safety or human factors.
